Preparing for the changeover from BS EN 16001:2009 to ISO 50001:2011

On 15^th June 2011, the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) announced its latest standard, ISO 50001 for Energy Management. Previously, BS EN 16001 was the nationally recognised standard for Energy Management however the new ISO 50001 Energy Management standard provides a more robust framework using a slightly different approach. The new standard uses the same plan, do, check, act system as used by the majority of ISO standards, allowing it to be easily integrated alongside other certifications.

ISO 50001 for Energy Management helps your business to put effective processes in place for managing energy use and output, enabling you to identify areas where you can reduce waste and reduce consumption.

While customers may still achieve BS EN 16001 if they prefer, QMS would encourage choosing ISO 50001 instead. It is anticipated that the European Centre for Standardisation (CEN) will vote to formally adopt ISO 50001 at some point this year, meaning that BS 16001 will be removed from publication. The exact date for the changeover is yet to be announced but there will be an 18 month transition period so that businesses may make the changeover without needing to rush.
