ISO 22301:2019 Revision Published

20.11.2019

The ISO 22301 standard is the internationally recognised Standard for Business Continuity Management Systems (BCMS).  It defines the steps you need to take to implement and maintain a business continuity plan, helping you reduce the threat of disruption, protect your assets, and recover quickly from any incidents.

ISO 22301:2019 was published on October 31st and is the most recent revision, replacing the first edition (ISO 22301:2012). The Standard has been updated to remain current and relevant in today’s market.

The main changes to the latest version include:

  • Clearer structure and terminology to make it easier to understand the requirements
  • Less prescriptive procedures and documentation requirements
  • More specific focus on planning for changes to the BCMS
  • Updates to remain in line with other ISO management system standards.

James Crask, who was involved in the ISO Technical Committee who developed the new standard said:

A resilient organization is one that is able to adapt to change, is aware of where its vulnerabilities lie and has plans in place to respond should things go wrong,

ISO 22301:2019 is designed to help organisations put those plans in place, and protect themselves, their clients, suppliers and other stakeholders if a disaster ever does strike. Benefits of ISO 22301:2019 include:

  • Reduced cost of a business disruption
  • Creation of a competitive advantage by protecting your brand reputation
  • Confidence is inspired in customers, suppliers and other stakeholders that your business can deal with the unexpected
  • Provides the ability to comply with legislative requirements

As yet, there is no date set for when organisations must transition to the new version of the standard, but if it follows the same timeline as previous ISO upgrades, this is likely to be around 3 years.
