Cutting costs with ISO 14001

Cut the cost of environmental management with ISO 14001.

Does your company want to improve its ‘green’ credentials? Are you looking to cut the costs of waste management, while reducing your environmental impact? Then look no further than ISO 14001, the internationally recognised standard for Environmental Management Systems.

Following the ISO 14001 framework will help you identify and control all aspects of your organisation that affect the environment. It will enable you to examine the complete product life cycle, including your organisation’s use of natural resources. This will give you the information you need to reduce energy consumption and waste, so saving you money and improving profitability.

Getting certified by us

From your first consultation with our ISO specialists through to certification, it can take as little as 45 days. However, this depends on the size and complexity of your business.

We can normally save you time and effort by drafting your Documented Environmental Management System for you. This can also help you achieve certification faster than you would by doing it yourself.

For more details on what it takes to get certificated, please see our ISO 14001 implementation guide. Or use our ISO 14001 checklist to see what information you’ll need to provide to meet ISO 14001 requirements.

Cost of ISO 14001 FAQs

What are the typical costs associated with ISO 14001 certification?

With Citation ISO Certification, the ISO 14001 starting price on Consultancy is £1,049 + VAT or monthly is £72.42 + VAT. The exact price of ISO 14001 certification is bespoke to you and depends primarily on the number of sites, and employees that you have, but we also take into account turnover, location, and sector.

Included in our price is the creation of your management system on our online platform, Atlas, a gap analysis, templates and support to help you ensure compliance with the ISO, the certification audit, and finally certification. We’ll be there to help throughout your ISO journey.

If you’re not choosing Citation ISO as your provider, you can usually expect to pay fees to a consultant who will help you create a management system, and then a fee to a certification body to gain certification.

How much does it cost to implement an ISO 14001 environmental management system (EMS)?

With Citation ISO Certification, this varies, however, all of your implementation costs are included in our complete fee. We help you create and implement your management system with ease.

Are there any ongoing costs associated with maintaining ISO 14001 certification?

The only ongoing cost is the annual surveillance fee, this must take place once a year by the certifying body, with some providers carrying out more than one. This is to check your business still complies with the requirements of the ISO Standard. Annual fees are typically lower than the initial certification fee.

Another cost to consider if you don’t use Citation ISO Certification is the re-certification audit which is needed every 3 years. Some providers price this at more than the 1st and 2nd-year audits, but at Citation ISO Certification, we don’t change any re-certification fees.

Some organisations employ an environmental manager to manage compliance going forward, so that’s also a cost to think about. Citation ISO are on hand to support you with this and have ISOMentor, a virtual training platform with one of our leading ISO Consultants that can help you spread the workload by training more people on how to manage ISO 14001, how to conduct your Internal audits, Management Reviews and much more.

How do ISO 14001 certification costs compare to other types of certifications, such as ISO 9001 or ISO 45001?

ISO 14001, ISO 9001, and ISO 45001 are all around the same cost. Other standards such as ISO 27001, ISO 22301, ISO 20000 and ISO 31000 cost significantly more because of the greater requirements.

What factors can impact the cost of ISO 14001 certification?

Here are some factors that can impact the cost of ISO 14001:

  • Number of employees
  • Number of sites (can include overseas)
  • Business sector
  • The complexity of the business

Are there any hidden costs or fees associated with ISO 14001?

With us, there are no hidden costs or fees. If you’re new to ISOs then it’s important to remember that there is an annual audit fee as well as a certification fee, and some providers may charge for your 3rd year re-certification.

Some providers might include additional costs for access to digital platforms and client portals. But not us. You get access to Atlas at no extra cost and with unlimited users!

Can a company reduce the costs of ISO 14001 by doing some of the work in-house?

Yes. Companies can use an independent consultant to help create their management system. Then we can perform a compliance audit, with fees starting at £849 + VAT. However, if the newly created system doesn’t meet the ISO requirements, they will need to pay for a further compliance audit after the non-conformities have been addressed.
