ISO 45001 audit checklist for full compliance

Our consultants use the ISO 45001 audit checklist during the certification and audit process, to check that you’re compliant with the Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) Standard, which measures the effectiveness of occupational Health & Safety management systems in the workplace

Full compliance is necessary before we can award your certificate. The ISO 45001 audit checklist covers the seven main areas of the ISO 45001 Standard, and asks questions in the following areas:

  • Context of the organisation
  • Leadership
  • Planning
  • Support
  • Operation
  • Performance evaluation
  • Improvement

What does an ISO 45001 audit include?

An audit for ISO 45001 includes a range of questions to check against and gain an understanding of what to put in place and be doing to better optimise your occupational Health & Safety system. Don’t worry though if you don’t have everything in place. Citation ISO Certification will provide you with adequate time to address the areas of non-conformance before the certification process.

Use our ISO 45001 audit checklist to get the most out of your safety management systems.

Context of the organisation

  • Have you set out the external and internal Health and Safety issues relevant to your organisation?
  • Do you understand which parties have an impact on the system?
  • Does the system address:
    • Needs and expectations of all parties
    • Strategic vision
    • Objectives
    • Products and services

This means: the role your top management will play in leading, not just managing, your OH&S management system and actions required during the certification process.

  • What role will your top management play in leading the organisation towards achieving your ISO 45001 Management System?
  • Is there a framework in place for clearly communicating your objectives at all levels of the organisation?
    • Strategic
    • Functional
    • Departmental
    • Individual

This means: evaluating success, measuring risks and opportunities and planning the steps needed to increase desirable effects, prevent unwanted effects and achieve improvements.

  • Do you have a framework for identifying the risks and opportunities that could affect your OH&S Management System?
  • Have you integrated the steps required to implement the ISO 45001 Standard into your day-to-day practices?
  • Have you considered how you will need to change the ISO 45001 Management System over time?

This means: making sure you have the resources and tools you need to run and continually improve your OH&S management system.

  • Do you understand what resources you need to make implementation and maintenance of the system a success??
  • Is there a plan for reviewing these resources on a regular basis?
  • Is there a training plan in place for all individuals who may impact on the system?

This means: the steps you need to take to get going on your OH&S management system.

  • Have you clearly set out the processes you need to meet the requirements of the Standard ?
  • Have you co-ordinated your ISO 45001 operations with contractors so that you can manage any risks arising from their work?
  • Is there a clearly defined process in place with external providers?

Performance evaluation

This means: using your experience and knowledge to monitor, measure and analyse processes and changes, to consistently seek out ways to improve occupational Health & Safety.

  • Do you understand what you need to monitor and measure?
  • Do you know when you need to analyse and evaluate any results?
  • Is there a structure in place for Management Reviews?

This means: using the results from your evaluation and analysis to identify ways to enhance the OH&S management system that serves to increase levels of Health & Safety across the organisation.

  • Have you identified any areas for improvement that focus on you meeting your OH&S goals?
  • Is there a process for measuring any non-conformities?
  • Have you agreed how you will prioritise the continual improvement of the ISO 45001 Management System?
