ISO 45003 Certification
Psychological health & safety at work – Guidelines for managing psychosocial risks

The first global Standard guiding employers on mental health and well-being

This new ISO Standard has been developed by the International Organisation of Standardisation so that organisations can identify the conditions, circumstances and workplace demands that may have the potential to impair the psychological health and well-being of workers.

ISO 45003 therefore contains a set of detailed guidelines that aim to give employers practical help on how to manage psychosocial risk in the workplace. This helps organisations to develop a structure that allows them to identify primary risk factors and assess them to discover what changes can improve their working environment.

What is ISO 45003?

Published in June 2021, ISO 45003 is a set of guidelines for managing psychosocial risks in the workplace. It was put together by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) as a result of increased research on the negative impact of psychosocial risks on workers.

It was developed so that organisations of all sizes can implement processes that aim to protect their workers from psychological hazards and to provide them with support for their mental health and well-being. This will help more workplaces build a positive working environment that improves organisational resilience and enhances productivity and staff retention.

As a set of guidelines, ISO 45003 is not a Standard with requirements in the same way that ISO 45001 is, for example. However, Citation ISO Certification will be offering a certificate that demonstrates compliance with its principles.

For those organisations who currently hold ISO 45001 certification, ISO 45003 will help them to maintain their occupational health & safety management system and meet ISO 45001’s requirements.

ISO 45003 can also be incorporated into other ISO Standards.

Citation ISO Certification will be offering its own certificate to ISO 45003 that organisations can work towards. However, ISO 45003 is also well suited to being incorporated within other ISO Standards, including the following:

ISO 45001 / ISO 45003

Pair your processes for psychosocial health and well-being in the workplace with the international Standard for occupational health & safety for a comprehensive management system that considers all workplace risks to health.

ISO 9001 / ISO 45003

Pair the guidelines for worker mental health with the Standard for quality, which also places emphasis on staff well-being for stronger production and efficiency.

ISO 9001 / ISO 45001 / ISO 45003

Create an integrated management system that combines mental health and well-being with frameworks supporting occupational health & safety and quality management.

ISO 9001 / ISO 14001 / ISO 45001 / ISO 45003

Streamline your processes and build an integrated framework that incorporates quality, environmental management, occupational health & safety and workplace mental health and well-being into one smart system.

The benefits of ISO 45003

Implementing the practical processes outlined in ISO 45003 can improve your working environment, which can benefit your organisation in the following ways:

Here are the top benefits of using the ISO 45003 framework:

  1. Improved organisational resilience: with better risk management and a strong support network, workplaces will be able to adapt to potentially stressful situations or changes while maintaining the mental health of workers.

  2. Improved awareness: with improved monitoring and training, employees can gain a better understanding of their own well-being while managers can learn how to identify workers who may be at risk of mental ill health.

  3. Enhanced productivity: stress and other mental hazards can impair the productivity of workers. With better well-being, workers can increase their efficiency.

  4. Improved diversity, recruitment and retention: By having processes in place to support and protect workers, organisations can retain a diverse workforce and make their workplace a more attractive place for potential recruits.

  5. Legal compliance: It is a legal requirement for employers to protect workers and have risk assessments in place to protect their wellbeing. These guidelines help to ensure this requirement is met.

  6. Reduced absenteeism: Mental ill health can lead to workers needing time off to recover. With processes in place to protect workers from psychosocial hazards, you can help to reduce absenteeism and the time needed for staff to regain their mental fitness.

  7. Better communication: the Standard provides a framework for increased communication between workers and management, helping to remove barriers and encouraging employees to work together to reduce psychosocial risks.

  8. Stronger and safer policies for remote working and out-of-hours work: the Standard takes these aspects of modern-day work into consideration so that employers can develop processes that protect workers who don’t work in the organisation’s buildings or during usual working hours.

  9. Greater confidentiality: by establishing a confidentiality process, the Standard helps to protect workers from further psychosocial harm and maintains compliance to laws and regulations.

The requirements of ISO 45003

As a new Standard, ISO 45003 follows the Annex SL format, which means its clauses can be categorised into the following key areas:

  1. Context of the organisation: the internal and external factors that will influence the mental health and well-being of your workers.

  2. Leadership: the areas in which your organisation’s leaders need to be active to ensure that the guidelines are followed. ISO 45003 also places emphasis on worker participation.

  3. Planning: how you will adapt and react to changes and how you will identify, analyse and manage psychosocial risks.

  4. Support: how you will assign people, infrastructure and facilities to support your new processes.

  5. Operation: the processes that you will implement to meet legal obligations, support mental health and well-being and manage hazards.

  6. Performance evaluation: how you will monitor and evaluate your processes to ensure that they are working as they should.

  7. Improvement: how you will develop your processes to ensure they remain fit for purpose and that they continue to improve.
