BS EN 15713

Destruction of Confidential Material

Protect your confidential materials and dispose of them securely

Provide your customers, stakeholders and other interested parties with reassurance that confidential and commercially sensitive information – such as internal planning and strategy documents, and records containing personal information – is securely stored and appropriately disposed of.

What is BS EN 15713?

The BS EN 15713 Standard is a set of guidelines following industry best-practice for the secure storage and disposal of sensitive materials.

It covers the security of the premises, as well as how confidential material is collected, handled, transported, stored and destroyed – from the point of collection to the completion of destruction.

The Benefits of BS EN 15713

Here are some benefits of using the BS EN 15713 framework:

  1. Ensure compliance – With the correct controls in place, you can lessen the chance of fines from data protection regulators for a breach in legal obligations
  2. Reduce business risk – Industry standard guidelines mean that you can be confident that confidential information is disposed of securely, reducing the risk to your reputation from confidential data leaks
  3. Positive environmental impact – The guidelines direct certified businesses to recycle where possible, helping you to satisfy your organisation’s social responsibilities
  4. Enhanced reputation – Provide reassurance to your customers that you are committed to confidentiality by following a specific and specialised process for handling confidential information
  5. Win more business – An improved business reputation and increased customer satisfaction will contribute to increased contract and tender opportunities.
  6. Support customers – Provide your customers with the guidance they need to produce a formal policy of document disposal, reducing the risk of damage to their reputation

How much does BS EN 15713 cost?

The cost of certification depends on several factors. These include your sector, annual turnover, and number of employees. We will also need to know if you require industry specific accreditation (such as ASCB or UKAS).

However, QMS is committed to providing a cost-effective route to BS EN 15713 certification. That’s why we focus on making the process straightforward. We will save you money because, instead of creating complex document trails, we will build a Management System for the secure destruction of confidential material that works for you.

The Requirements of BS EN 15713

The BS EN 15713 standard uses a structure of twelve clauses which, roughly grouped together, cover four key areas:

  1. Contracts and audit trail - ensuring a written contract is signed and agreed by the client, as well as ensuring any sub-contractors follow these requirements
  2. Categorisation - how material should be categorised. Categories will determine the type of material and therefore how it will be destroyed
  3. Collection, transport and storage - how the material should be stored and collected, including the details on the vehicles required and security methods used
  4. Disposal - the processes for safely disposing of confidential material
